      History

Born in La Tuque (Québec), Paul-Émile Tremblay, S.J. entered the Society of Jesus in 1936. While studying physical sciences at Université de Montréal from 1941 to 1946, he taught mathematics, natural sciences, and physics at Collège Sainte-Marie and Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. During the 1950s at Brébeuf, he served as assistant director of the physics lab, director of the photography lab, and archivist of the Jesuit residence. He then worked in different spiritual ministries. From 1973 to 1978, he taught physics and chemistry at Collège Saint-Charles-Lwanga in Ziguinchor (Senegal), where he helped equip and organize the science labs. Back in Montreal in 1978, Father Tremblay worked as a collaborator at the Observatoire de géophysique du Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf for four years before becoming assistant director. In 1984, he was promoted to director, a position he maintained until 1997.
