Joseph Cadot, S.J. Collection

The collection contains records that attest to his religious life, including invitations and articles pertaining to his celebration of 60 years in the Society of Jesus, Province of Upper Canada newsletters, newspaper articles about his religious career, handwritten notes on the unveiling of a monument dedicated to him, and memorial cards.

Many of the records in the collection pertain to Father Cadot’s years in the Northern Missions, including a bound collection of hand-transcribed memoires recounting his experiences there compiled by Father Rolland. It also includes a scrapbook of photos of Father Cadot at Chippewa and Guelph in the 1930s, some featuring community members, and newspaper clippings. Some correspondence from the 1930s between Father Cadot and fellow Jesuits during his time at Chippewa Hill can also be found in the collection, as well as a typed account of his time at Cape Croker and Saugeen, written by him. It also includes postcards from Cape Croker.

Spanish Residential School Fonds

The Spanish Residential School fonds contains records that pertain to the establishment, administration, operations, and eventual closing of the Spanish Residential School. It also contains records that pertain to the day school in Wiikwemkoong, which preceded the Spanish school. The schools were administered by the Jesuit fathers of the Upper Canada Province, initially named Independent Mission of Canada (1887-1907), Province of Canada (1907-1924), then Vice-Province of Upper Canada (1924-1939).

The fonds is organized into five series: Administration and Financial Records; Student Affairs and Community Life; Spanish Residential School Buildings; Jesuit Personnel and School Staff; Spanish Residential School Photography Laboratory. It contains correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, financial statements, student registers, and student publications. The fonds also contains photographs associated with the schools’ cultural and sports programs, including hockey and football, photographs of the schools’ buildings and Jesuit personnel, and photographs of the Spanish community. Notably, the fonds also contains photographs produced by the students themselves in the school’s photo laboratory, established by Fr. William P. Maurice, S.J.

This fonds provides information on the history of the Fort William Mission and the surrounding area. It contains historical brochures and diaries about the Fort William Mission. It documents the missionary activities of the region. It also provides an account of Jesuit activities with the Indigenous communities in the area, including marriage licenses, lease agreements, and various contracts.

The fonds contains some correspondence of Nicolas Fremiot, S.J., detailing his activities in the region, as well as other correspondence by Jesuit priests involved in the Northern Ontario missions.

The fonds contains correspondence from the 1870s and 1880s written by Pierre Hamel, S.J. mostly addressed to other Jesuits at Immaculée-Conception in Montreal. Two photograph portraits of Father Hamel, a small hand-painted booklet dedicated to Father Hamel from a school, and an official 1887 Jesuit document (written in Latin) can also be found in the fonds.

Cape Croker Mission Fonds

This fonds provides information on the history of the St. Mary’s Parish in Cape Croker, and on the Waubaushene St. John’s Parish. It contains diaries of the Cape Croker Mission, from 1902 to 1943, in addition to correspondence and announcements pertaining to the Waubaushene St. John’s Parish. It also contains financial records about the Waubaushene community.

The fonds includes graphic material and photographic records on the Waubaushene St. John’s church, before and after the fire of 1914. It also includes photographs of Edward J. Devine, S. J.’s visit to the area in the early 1920s. In addition, the fonds comprises maps and plans of the First Shrine to Canadian Martyrs as well as a map of the Cape Croker mission circa 1930.

The fonds comprises records that attest to his religious life, including a Latin letter confirming his ordination, invitations to his 50th jubilee, a text published by him pertaining to Catholics in the Eastern Townships, newspaper articles pertaining to his religious career, a copy of Messenger of the Sacred Heart yearbook featuring him from the 1960s, and a typed account of his time at the Spanish Ontario residential school. The collection contains a number of photographs of Father Walsh with other Jesuits and at various events, as well as a school photo from 1917.

Receipts and correspondence, particularly with the residential school in Spanish, Ontario, as well as vehicle motor repair certifications and correspondence about the mechanics class Brother Vandermoor oversaw at Spanish are also included in the fonds.

The collection includes biographical information written about Ernest Comte, S.J. in the 1920s, as well as his catalogue page and memorial cards. It also includes original copies of his own writings about his time at Killarney, many correspondences produced by him, an original sermon he authored, accounts of his missions, and transcribed excerpts from several additional letters he wrote. The collection also contains several photograph portraits of Father Comte as well as one negative.
