Spanish Residential School Fonds

The Spanish Residential School fonds contains records that pertain to the establishment, administration, operations, and eventual closing of the Spanish Residential School. It also contains records that pertain to the day school in Wiikwemkoong, which preceded the Spanish school. The schools were administered by the Jesuit fathers of the Upper Canada Province, initially named Independent Mission of Canada (1887-1907), Province of Canada (1907-1924), then Vice-Province of Upper Canada (1924-1939).

The fonds is organized into five series: Administration and Financial Records; Student Affairs and Community Life; Spanish Residential School Buildings; Jesuit Personnel and School Staff; Spanish Residential School Photography Laboratory. It contains correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, financial statements, student registers, and student publications. The fonds also contains photographs associated with the schools’ cultural and sports programs, including hockey and football, photographs of the schools’ buildings and Jesuit personnel, and photographs of the Spanish community. Notably, the fonds also contains photographs produced by the students themselves in the school’s photo laboratory, established by Fr. William P. Maurice, S.J.

Julien Paquin, S.J. Fonds

The fonds documents the activities of Julien Paquin, S.J. It contains information on the presence of Father Paquin within different missions in Northern Ontario and concerning his involvement in the First World War. It also includes his correspondence. The fonds is comprised of five series: correspondence, military service, missions, spiritual notes and reflections and Collège Saint-Boniface. The documents part of the fonds range from 1896 to [1935].

The fonds includes records pertaining to Brother Vandermoor’s religious life including transcribed prayers and prayer cards as well as a spiritual notebook. Receipts and correspondence, particularly with the residential school in Spanish, Ontario, as well as vehicle motor repair certifications and correspondence about the mechanics class Brother Vandermoor oversaw at Spanish are also included in the fonds.

The fonds contains documents pertaining to his religious life including his baptism certificate, a Latin letter from Father Dufresne confirming his ordination, photocopies of mission dates and information, an Upper Canada Province newsletter featuring him, and prayer cards. Additionally, the fonds contains a number of photograph portraits of Father Howitt at various missions, many which feature Indigenous community members, and one negative. A number of correspondence can also be found in the fonds, most of which was produced from the 1920s to 1940s at Spanish, Ontario, as well as Cape Croker, Port Arthur, and Nipigon, and which reports on his mission work.

Holy Cross Mission of Wikwemikong Fonds

This fonds provides information, including publications, on the history of Manitoulin Island, Wikwemikong, and other communities of Northern Ontario. Furthermore, it provides an account of the erection of the Jesuit Holy Cross Mission at Wikwemikong. It documents the activities of the parish of Holy Cross via administrative and financial records, and marriage and baptism records of members of the community. In addition, the fonds provides information on the Wikwemikong schools administered by the Jesuits.

The fonds contains correspondence and notes of Jesuit priests, including diaries, concerning the activities of the Wikwemikong parish, and of other northern Jesuit missions. Accordingly, the fonds contains records on the Gore Bay parish, Killarney, Batchewana, Little Current, Killarney, Spanish River, and Lake Huron North Shore missions, among others. Moreover, the fonds includes documents on the celebration of the Holy Cross Mission, and on the church at Wikwemikong. The fonds also contains photographs that document the different northern missions, as well as photographs of church buildings and parishes’ communities.

The collection documents the life and activities of Eugene Papineau, S.J. The collection reflects Father’s Papineau presence in Northern Ontario, particularly at Wikwemikong on Manitoulin Island. The collection includes biographical information on Father Papineau, as well as correspondence written by and about him. It also contains photographs that testify to his activities in Northern Ontario, as well as portraits.
