Scope and content

The series testifies to the interest of the Jesuit missionaries in the history of Manitoulin Island, Wiikwemkoong, the surrounding regions and the communities inhabiting these territories. Thus, it attests to the fulfilment of their role as historians of their missions, but also to the sustained research work of some Jesuit Fathers such as Edward O’Flaherty and David Nazar. The projects carried by Frank A. Myers, Honorary President of the Manitoulin Historical Society and genealogical tables of the Potawatomi descendants make up a significant portion of the series. Several records are undated, but a majority can be placed between the early 1950s and late 1960s.

The series is divided into five files: Historical Notes and Testimonies; Research Work on the Region; Research by the Manitoulin Historical Society; Research on the Origins of Indigenous Names; Genealogical Research. It contains two publications, correspondence, research material, work documents, manuscripts, chronological notes, Historia Domus, summaries of events, personal observations and testimonies, genealogical tables, a booklet, programs, transcription of an interview and two photographs.
