The collection contains original correspondence written by Jean-François Chambon, S.J. in the 1890s, as well as an 1884 typed account of Father Chambon’s time at Garden River addressed to the Superior. The collection also includes lumber receipts and other lists of materials, as well as photocopies of biographical material pertaining to Father Chambon.

The Arthur E. Jones, S.J. fonds reflects Father Jones personal life and his roles as historian, researcher, editor, and writer during his tenure as archivist at the Archives du Collège Sainte-Marie in Montreal from 1882 to 1918. The fund, dating from 1853 to 1918, consists largely of textual documents, including correspondence, postcards, memorabilia, clippings, bound writings, diplomas, publications, and other related printed material. Arthur E. Jones’s personal records encompass his religious education during his novitiate in Angers, France, including his personal passport, devotion vows, and letters to his mother Lucy Catherine Macdonell. They also include records such as his priesthood ordination certificate, travel permits provided by members of the Jesuits, and letters attesting to his affiliation with various associations. The fonds also contains biographical notes on Arthur E. Jones’s obituary written by F. Melançon, funeral arrangements for him at the Gesù Church in 1918 and letters pertaining to genealogical research on his family.

In addition, the fonds documents Father Jones’s active involvement in supplying documentation and publications on the Jesuits Estates Act, as well as debates between 1888 and 1889. Correspondence to Father Jones from Reuben Gold Thwaites and the Burrows publishers confirm his contribution to the publication of the Jesuits Relations and Allied Documents. Other records within the fonds relate to Father Jones’s inquiries, transcriptions, documentation and publications about the history of the Jesuits in New France and during the suppression of the Society of Jesus. The fonds also includes ephemera and certificates related to the Jesuit exhibit prepared by Arthur E. Jones for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904. Finally, the fonds comprises documents such as letters, copies, fieldwork journals, notes and other records reflecting his studies on the Jesuit missions among the Huron-Wendat nation, as well as the sites of the Jesuit martyrs which served for his publication in the 1902 Annual Archaeological Report. The fonds also contains material related to the research, publication, and reception of his work, “8endake Ehen or Old Huronia” in 1908-1909. An unpublished manuscript written by Arthur E. Jones, S.J. on the Wyandots is also included.

Various materials scattered throughout Arthur E. Jones’s fonds include photographs, blueprints, maps, technical and artistic drawings, sketches, and Father Jones’s personal objects, along with four printing plates. Photographs depict Arthur E. Jones’s portraits taken at different moments in his life, including those of his LLD graduation ceremony at the University of Toronto in 1913. Other photos are related to Arthur E. Jones’s family portraits, landscapes sites, as well as one photo of Father Jones’s life as a professor at St. Francis Xavier College in New York, between 1874 and 1875. Arthur E. Jones’s drawings showcase his artistic skills developed during his lifetime.

The fonds contains documents pertaining to his religious life including his baptism certificate, a Latin letter from Father Dufresne confirming his ordination, photocopies of mission dates and information, an Upper Canada Province newsletter featuring him, and prayer cards. Additionally, the fonds contains a number of photograph portraits of Father Howitt at various missions, many which feature Indigenous community members, and one negative. A number of correspondence can also be found in the fonds, most of which was produced from the 1920s to 1940s at Spanish, Ontario, as well as Cape Croker, Port Arthur, and Nipigon, and which reports on his mission work.

The fonds includes records pertaining to Brother Vandermoor’s religious life including transcribed prayers and prayer cards as well as a spiritual notebook. Receipts and correspondence, particularly with the residential school in Spanish, Ontario, as well as vehicle motor repair certifications and correspondence about the mechanics class Brother Vandermoor oversaw at Spanish are also included in the fonds.

The collection includes biographical information written about Ernest Comte, S.J. in the 1920s, as well as his catalogue page and memorial cards. It also includes original copies of his own writings about his time at Killarney, many correspondences produced by him, an original sermon he authored, accounts of his missions, and transcribed excerpts from several additional letters he wrote. The collection also contains several photograph portraits of Father Comte as well as one negative.

The collection contains a Jesuit Brothers’ Supplementary Bulletin with information pertaining to his religious career. The collection includes both original letters and some photocopies of letters written by and to Brother Jennesseaux from the 1860s to 1880s, to Collège Saint-Marie in Montreal, Guelph, Ontario, and Manitoulin Island, both in French and English.

The collection contains records that attest to his religious life, including a souvenir photo card from his first mass and ordination, birth and baptism records, and memorial cards. A number of photographs can be found in the collection which depict a pow wow in Spanish, Ontario in the 1930s along with other images of Father Dwyer with Fathers and Brothers at Spanish, mostly taken in the 1920s. The collection also contains correspondence from the 1930s to 1940s, most of which is between Father Dwyer and the Provincial and concerns missions at Spanish, Wikwemikong, Garden River, and Sault Ste-Marie.

The collection contains biographical records relating to John Joseph Barker, S.J. including his certificate of vows, as well as newspaper clippings pertaining to Father Barker and a transcription of a taped interview with him.

The collection contains photocopies of biographical information pertaining to Joseph Patrick Jordan, S.J., including his card catalogue entries, lists highlighting key dates in Father Jordan’s career, and a photocopy of his obituary. A number of Father Jordan’s personal records can also be found in the collection, including his baptism certificate, a Latin letter confirming his ordination, his passport application documents, and his certificate of Canadian citizenship. It also contains information pertaining to Father Jordan’s death, including photocopies of burial and cemetery information, his death certificate, and memorial cards.

Several photograph portraits of Father Jordan and his peers from his school days can also be found in the collection, as well as correspondence from Father Jordan to the Provincial and to the Dioceses of San Diego and Los Angeles and the Province of California, mostly from the 1970s and pertaining to his various California assignments.

The collection contains records that attest to his religious life, including a Latin document confirming his ordination, photocopies of articles pertaining to his religious career, and memorial cards. A number of photographs can be found in the collection, many of which are portraits of Father Oliver or depict him on vacation with other Jesuits or at various missions, including Longlac, Ontario and at the Spanish, Ontario residential school. Additionally, a substantial amount of correspondence can be found in the collection, most of which was sent by Father Oliver from Spanish, Ontario in the 1930s through 1950s to colleagues and friends, as well as a batch of correspondence from the 1970s between Father Oliver and his family.
