              La Collection de photographies X-6 témoigne de la présence et des activités missionnaires des jésuites dans des communautés du Nord de l’Ontario. Les photographies incluent des églises, territoires et paysages, écoles, étudiants et résidences pour étudiants. Elles incluent également des portraits de jésuites œuvrant dans les diverses communautés du Nord de l’Ontario.

              Le fonds est organisé en 10 séries qui témoignent de l’organisation originale dans lesquelles les photographies étaient classées : Wikwemikong, Waubaushene, Spanish, Sault-Ste-Marie, Port-Arthur, Penetanguishene, White River, Schreiber, Victoria Mines et Missions de l’Ouest.

              Missions du Nord de l’Ontario
              Fonds Holy Cross Mission of Wiikwemkoong

              The fonds testifies to the activities carried out by the Holy Cross Mission of Wiikwemkoong since its transfer to the Jesuits in 1844 and until 2004, and provides information on the history of Manitoulin Island, Wiikwemkoong and other communities of Northern Ontario. It provides information on the activities of the parishes Jesuit missionaries served via administrative and financial records, as well as sacramental registers that compiled data on the members and families of the communities. Thus, in addition to documenting the activities of the Holy Cross parish and missionaries, the fonds contains records concerning the parishes of Gore Bay, Little Current, Killarney, Batchewana, M’chigeeng, Sheshegwaning, Spanish River and Lake Huron North Shore, among others. It also contains records testifying to the Jesuits’ interest and implication in schools in Batchewana, Kaboni, Killarney, Sheguiandah, Spanish, and Wiikwemkoong.

              The fonds contains diaries and notes taken by Jesuit priests concerning the activities of the missions and certain events. It also contains correspondence, parish communications, work documents and history notes, Status Animarum, Historia Domus, manuscripts, two publications, a prospectus, programs, architectural drawings and maps, as weel as photographs that document the different mission points, landscapes, church buildings, Catholic celebrations, events, and parish members and families.

              Mission Holy Cross de Wiikwemkoong

              This fonds provides information on the history of the Fort William Mission and the surrounding area. It contains historical brochures and diaries about the Fort William Mission. It documents the missionary activities of the region. It also provides an account of Jesuit activities with the Indigenous communities in the area, including marriage licenses, lease agreements, and various contracts.

              The fonds contains some correspondence of Nicolas Fremiot, S.J., detailing his activities in the region, as well as other correspondence by Jesuit priests involved in the Northern Ontario missions.

              Jésuites du Haut-Canada
              Spanish Residential School Fonds

              The Spanish Residential School fonds contains records that pertain to the establishment, administration, operations, and eventual closing of the Spanish Residential School. It also contains records that pertain to the day school in Wiikwemkoong, which preceded the Spanish school. The schools were administered by the Jesuit fathers of the Upper Canada Province, initially named Independent Mission of Canada (1887-1907), Province of Canada (1907-1924), then Vice-Province of Upper Canada (1924-1939).

              The fonds is organized into five series: Administration and Financial Records; Student Affairs and Community Life; Spanish Residential School Buildings; Jesuit Personnel and School Staff; Spanish Residential School Photography Laboratory. It contains correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, financial statements, student registers, and student publications. The fonds also contains photographs associated with the schools’ cultural and sports programs, including hockey and football, photographs of the schools’ buildings and Jesuit personnel, and photographs of the Spanish community. Notably, the fonds also contains photographs produced by the students themselves in the school’s photo laboratory, established by Fr. William P. Maurice, S.J.

              Spanish Residential School
              Joseph Jennesseaux Collection

              The collection contains a Jesuit Brothers’ Supplementary Bulletin with information pertaining to his religious career. The collection includes both original letters and some photocopies of letters written by and to Brother Jennesseaux from the 1860s to 1880s, to Collège Saint-Marie in Montreal, Guelph, Ontario, and Manitoulin Island, both in French and English.

              Ernest Comte, S.J. Collection

              The collection includes biographical information written about Ernest Comte, S.J. in the 1920s, as well as his catalogue page and memorial cards. It also includes original copies of his own writings about his time at Killarney, many correspondences produced by him, an original sermon he authored, accounts of his missions, and transcribed excerpts from several additional letters he wrote. The collection also contains several photograph portraits of Father Comte as well as one negative.

              Timothy Dwyer, S.J. Collection

              The collection contains records that attest to his religious life, including a souvenir photo card from his first mass and ordination, birth and baptism records, and memorial cards. A number of photographs can be found in the collection which depict a pow wow in Spanish, Ontario in the 1930s along with other images of Father Dwyer with Fathers and Brothers at Spanish, mostly taken in the 1920s. The collection also contains correspondence from the 1930s to 1940s, most of which is between Father Dwyer and the Provincial and concerns missions at Spanish, Wikwemikong, Garden River, and Sault Ste-Marie.

              John Raymond Oliver, S.J. Collection

              The collection contains records that attest to his religious life, including a Latin document confirming his ordination, photocopies of articles pertaining to his religious career, and memorial cards. A number of photographs can be found in the collection, many of which are portraits of Father Oliver or depict him on vacation with other Jesuits or at various missions, including Longlac, Ontario and at the Spanish, Ontario residential school. Additionally, a substantial amount of correspondence can be found in the collection, most of which was sent by Father Oliver from Spanish, Ontario in the 1930s through 1950s to colleagues and friends, as well as a batch of correspondence from the 1970s between Father Oliver and his family.
