Joseph Cadot, S.J. Collection

The collection contains records that attest to his religious life, including invitations and articles pertaining to his celebration of 60 years in the Society of Jesus, Province of Upper Canada newsletters, newspaper articles about his religious career, handwritten notes on the unveiling of a monument dedicated to him, and memorial cards.

Many of the records in the collection pertain to Father Cadot’s years in the Northern Missions, including a bound collection of hand-transcribed memoires recounting his experiences there compiled by Father Rolland. It also includes a scrapbook of photos of Father Cadot at Chippewa and Guelph in the 1930s, some featuring community members, and newspaper clippings. Some correspondence from the 1930s between Father Cadot and fellow Jesuits during his time at Chippewa Hill can also be found in the collection, as well as a typed account of his time at Cape Croker and Saugeen, written by him. It also includes postcards from Cape Croker.

David T. Asselin, S.J. Collection

The collection contains records relating to Father Asselin’s religious life, including certificates of baptism and confirmation, memorial cards, and a letter confirming his ordination (in Latin), as well as personal documents like passports, memos, and military certificates.

Many records in the collection testify to Father Asselin’s religious/academic involvement, including a copy of the Spiritual Exercises and his own research and publications on the Exercises, a booklet published by Father Asselin about spirituality, newspaper articles featuring his research, photographs from his lectures, scholastic certificates, and Loyola College mementos and brochures. Abundant correspondence from the 1950s to 1970s—mostly scholastic in nature and having to do with the Spiritual Exercises (which was his speciality), but extending to casual correspondence with friends, colleagues, and family—can also be found in the collection.

A number of photographs and negatives may be found in the collection which depict Father Asselin at a military camp and various religious ceremonies and conferences.

Elle offre des informations, notamment par le biais de notes et correspondances, sur les perceptions, observations et états d’âmes des jésuites dans la région, en particulier en ce qui à trait à leurs rencontres avec les communautés autochtones s’y trouvant. La collection comprend des notes et statistiques, regroupées et compilées par les jésuites, sur la Mission Sainte-Croix et les populations autochtones présentes dans la région.

Elle inclut de la correspondance et des notes de différents pères et frères jésuites, notamment celles de Nicolas Point, s.j., Joseph Hanipaux, s.j., Jean-Pierre-Choné, s.j., Auguste Kohler, s.j. et Martin Férard, s.j., présents sur l’île de 1844 jusque dans les années 1860. La collection contient également une chronologie d’événements et de différentes activités jésuites, et celles d’autres missionnaires sur l’île, de 1836 à 1937.

La collection comprend des documents associés aux activités des jésuites du Canada en Nouvelle-France. La grande majorité de ces documents sont des transcriptions effectués par Félix Martin, s.j. et les archivistes qui l’ont suivi au Collège Sainte-Marie. Les documents formant la collection témoignent de leur utilisation et création en tant que documents de recherche. Par conséquent, en plus d’offrir de l’information sur les jésuites en Nouvelle-France, la collection est caractérisé par le processus de développement de connaissances sur les jésuites en Nouvelle-France effectué à partir de 1840. Ces transcriptions comprennent de la correspondance de Charles Garnier, s.j. (1605-1649), Paul Raguenau, s.j. (1608-1680), Paul Le Jeune, s.j. (1613-1664), Barthélémy Vimont, s.j. (1594-1667) et autres jésuites présents au Canada au 17e siècle. En plus des notes de recherche et des manuscrits concernant les jésuites de la Nouvelle-France transcrits par les pères jésuites, la collection contient de la correspondance de Félix Martin, s.j. ainsi que ses recherches, et documents compilés, sur Kateri Tekakwitha. Ces documents de père Martin datent de 1848 jusqu’à 1880.

Joseph-Marie Couture, S.J. Collection

The collection contains records pertaining to the religious life of Joseph-Marie Couture, S.J. As the man credited with introducing aviation to Northern Ontario, a number of records pertaining to flight and his aircraft can be found in the collection: correspondence between Father Couture and the Provincial concerning his plane, flight-related budgets and expense lists, newspaper articles and books written during and after his life about his story of flight, and a number of photographs of Father Couture and various community members with his plane.

His long career at Longlac and Lake Nipigon, Ontario is demonstrated by a substantial amount of correspondence reporting to other Jesuits about his experience, as well as requesting supplies and detailing logistics. While the bulk of the correspondence is in letter format, the collection also comprises a number of telegraphs sent to Father Couture commemorating his silver Jubilee (indicating 25 years in the Society of Jesus). Additionally, the collection contains a small number of his personal belongings, including a mass book, Longlac paraphernalia like brochures, and several diplomas and certificates.

Many of the records pertain to the aftermath of Father Couture’s death: photographs of his tomb-unveiling ceremony, commemorative articles and scrapbooks produced by colleagues and friends, and telegraphs sent to his contemporaries in Longlac expressing condolences for his passing can all be found in the collection.

La Collection de photographies X-6 témoigne de la présence et des activités missionnaires des jésuites dans des communautés du Nord de l’Ontario. Les photographies incluent des églises, territoires et paysages, écoles, étudiants et résidences pour étudiants. Elles incluent également des portraits de jésuites œuvrant dans les diverses communautés du Nord de l’Ontario.

Le fonds est organisé en 10 séries qui témoignent de l’organisation originale dans lesquelles les photographies étaient classées : Wikwemikong, Waubaushene, Spanish, Sault-Ste-Marie, Port-Arthur, Penetanguishene, White River, Schreiber, Victoria Mines et Missions de l’Ouest.

The collection includes biographical information written about Ernest Comte, S.J. in the 1920s, as well as his catalogue page and memorial cards. It also includes original copies of his own writings about his time at Killarney, many correspondences produced by him, an original sermon he authored, accounts of his missions, and transcribed excerpts from several additional letters he wrote. The collection also contains several photograph portraits of Father Comte as well as one negative.

Timothy Dwyer, S.J. Collection

The collection contains records that attest to his religious life, including a souvenir photo card from his first mass and ordination, birth and baptism records, and memorial cards. A number of photographs can be found in the collection which depict a pow wow in Spanish, Ontario in the 1930s along with other images of Father Dwyer with Fathers and Brothers at Spanish, mostly taken in the 1920s. The collection also contains correspondence from the 1930s to 1940s, most of which is between Father Dwyer and the Provincial and concerns missions at Spanish, Wikwemikong, Garden River, and Sault Ste-Marie.
