Ernest Comte, S.J. Collection

The collection includes biographical information written about Ernest Comte, S.J. in the 1920s, as well as his catalogue page and memorial cards. It also includes original copies of his own writings about his time at Killarney, many correspondences produced by him, an original sermon he authored, accounts of his missions, and transcribed excerpts from several additional letters he wrote. The collection also contains several photograph portraits of Father Comte as well as one negative.

Michael Karhaienton Jacobs, S.J. Fonds

The fonds contains records relating to the religious life of Michael Karhaienton Jacobs, S.J., and demonstrate the pertinence of his Kanien’kehá:ka heritage. As the first Kanien’kehá:ka Jesuit, Father Jacobs’ fonds contains a number of records relating to events, speeches, and celebrations that highlight his unique position. His ground-breaking 1934 ordination at the Saint-François-Xavier Mission is illustrated through many photographs, newspaper clippings, and correspondences. Similarly, his widely celebrated 50th Jubilee is marked by a number of newspaper clippings, press releases, invitations, and photographs.

His interest in research and education is demonstrated through a series of research notes, essays and talks pertaining to the roots of the Kanien’kéha language, the history of the Onondaga Nation, and the story of Kateri Tekakwitha; records pertaining to the local high school including class lists and educational catalogues can also be found in the fonds.

A number of drafts, correspondences, and newspaper clippings document the process by which Father Jacobs worked to research, design, install, and commemorate a “liberty bell” at St. Regis. The erection of a number of other statues and plaques are the subject of many of the records in the fonds including newspaper clippings, photographs, and correspondences. Father Jacobs’ involvement in the National Shrine of the North American Martyrs in Auriesville, New York, is represented in the fonds through correspondence, photographs, and leaflets; his membership in a number of societies, including Knights of Columbus, is demonstrated through group photos, receipts, and event invitations and bulletins. Additionally, personal documents, including extensive documentation around his ironworker brother, Thomas Jacobs, and family correspondence pertaining to personal and estate matters can also be found in the fonds.

Finally, several objects in the fonds mark Jacobs’ role in his community: gold model lacrosse sticks illustrate his attempt to revive sports in St. Regis; a series of multicoloured feathers refer back to his Kanien’kehá:ka identity, and a number of crucifixes speak to his religious dedication.

The fonds documents the life and professional and religious activities of Stanley P. Drummond, S.J. It retraces his schooling, his novitiate, and his graduate studies. It provides information pertaining to the foundation and teaching at the Biology Department and Laboratory at Loyola College, as well as general departmental information.

The fonds also contains information pertaining to Drummond’s various administrative positions at the Loyola College and Concordia University.

The fonds furthermore documents Loyola College’s history, as well as students’ daily life on campus. Photographs provide information on sports teams, classes, building constructions, the chapel, and other spaces and activities. Many of these documents concern Francis Breslin, S.J., and his students.

The fonds contains correspondence between Drummond and his friends, family, and alumni, as well as various recognitions and awards.

The fonds contains documents pertaining to his religious life including his baptism certificate, a Latin letter from Father Dufresne confirming his ordination, photocopies of mission dates and information, an Upper Canada Province newsletter featuring him, and prayer cards. Additionally, the fonds contains a number of photograph portraits of Father Howitt at various missions, many which feature Indigenous community members, and one negative. A number of correspondence can also be found in the fonds, most of which was produced from the 1920s to 1940s at Spanish, Ontario, as well as Cape Croker, Port Arthur, and Nipigon, and which reports on his mission work.

The collection contains records that attest to his religious life, including a souvenir photo card from his first mass and ordination, birth and baptism records, and memorial cards. A number of photographs can be found in the collection which depict a pow wow in Spanish, Ontario in the 1930s along with other images of Father Dwyer with Fathers and Brothers at Spanish, mostly taken in the 1920s. The collection also contains correspondence from the 1930s to 1940s, most of which is between Father Dwyer and the Provincial and concerns missions at Spanish, Wikwemikong, Garden River, and Sault Ste-Marie.

The collection includes both original letters and some photocopies of letters written by and to Brother Jennesseaux from the 1860s to 1880s, to Collège Saint-Marie in Montreal, Guelph, Ontario, and Manitoulin Island, both in French and English.

Pierre potier, s.j. a ajouté ses propres notations et additions, dans une écriture similaire. La liste des racines verbales a été conçu dans l’objectif de servir comme un manuel et comme ressource pour les missionnaires huron-wendat, avec des dérivés et des exemples.

Fonds Maurice Buist, s.j.

Le fonds témoigne principalement des activités professionnelles de Maurice Buist, s.j., à titre de professeur et de directeur l’Observatoire de sismologie et de météorologie du Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. On retrouve entre autres des cahiers de théorie, des tapuscrits de conférences, des travaux de recherche, des demandes de subventions, des mémoires et des rapports, des prix remis par le Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf pour témoigner du travail de père Buist. S’y trouve également une grande quantité de correspondance technique (entre autres avec Ernesto Gherzi, s.j. qui a travaillé au Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf avec Buist), un inventaire du matériel de l’Observatoire et de sa valeur et des factures d’achats d’instruments scientifiques. Le fonds comprends aussi des dossiers et des photographies concernant des éclipses de soleil.

De plus, le fonds contient des documents personnels tels : visas, certificat de baptême, passeports, image souvenir de son ordination, triduum, notes de voyage, documents concernant les revenus et les pensions, documents médicaux. Il contient également des manuels d’écriture de père Buist en tant qu’élève et des notes prises en cours d’histoire.

Le fonds contient aussi des documents de nature spirituelle : des sermons, un manuel sur les retraites d’orientation, des notes tapuscrites et manuscrites de retraites. Finalement, on retrouve des images de la résidence de vacances des jésuites à Barkmere (autour de 1930) et quelques documents en lien avec des adoptions : des carnets d’adoption (notes manuscrites sur les « adoptants » et les « adoptés »), de la correspondance à propos d’adoption et des photographies et des négatifs en lien avec des adoptions.
