Biografie

Jean-François Chambon, S.J. was born in St-Didier, France, on December 19, 1831. He entered the Society of Jesus at Sault-au-Récollet in Montreal on August 30, 1867, after having been ordained a priest ten years earlier to serve his own diocese of Puy followed by eight years of volunteer work at Florida missions.

Soon after joining the Jesuits, Father Chambon began a ten-year prison and hospital chaplaincy in New York. In 1880, he embarked on a twenty-year pastoral career in Northern Ontario, beginning at the Holy Cross Mission in Wikwemikong, then proceeding to the Fort William Mission. From 1882 to 1895, Father Chambon had his base at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Besides occasional interruptions due to illness, he spent the years 1895 to 1902 carrying out short missions at Wikwemikong, Massey, Garden River, and Fort William. He retired to Sault-au-Récollet and died there in 1902.
